Hobart Barracks and 652 LIGHT AIRCRAFT SQUADRON, DETMOLD, BAOR

Formerly known as Hobart Barracks and 652 LIGHT AIRCRAFT SQUADRON, DETMOLD, BAOR - Closed 31 July 1995.

The former barracks has been completely de-militarised.
Some of the Buildings have been redeveloped and put up for sale, but a majority on the main strip are still empty and subject to vandalism.

The Parade square has been removed, and the Tank park has been replaced by a huge DIY warehouse.

The NAAFI block (Chieftan Club) has also been subject to vandals and Metal thieves, but it been used at some stage for Flea Markets.

I served at 71 Ac Wksp REME from '81 - '85 and from '92 - '94 when it was reformed into 7 Bn REME.

I have been back a few years ago and it is a sad place to see. I have many happy memories of the place.

Posted to 71 Ac Wksp REME in January of 1986 and after four hundred quid well spent on a PVR, started as a civvy working at 71 Ac Wksp REME in December of the same year. Stayed there until August of 1992 before buggering off back to the UK. Returned a few years later after everyone had left but before it was really opened up by the Germans. The outside areas definitely needed a bit more work!!!

Have a look at the area on Google Earth. What a change.

I recently came across a pewter tankard presented to a gunner D.F. Anderson 17 flight AAC. June 1967 to July 69. was this flight at Hobart during these years? If so did you know him?

Kevin, many thanks for showing all those interesting photographs of Hobart barracks. I was with HQ Squadron, HQ 20 Armoured Brigade from 1963-65. The buildings appear to have been demolished in recent years but the area now is named Robert Nowak Str. Hobart was the best posting I ever had and although I left more than 50 years ago I always think of the evenings out in Detmold and the surrounding villages!! Wonderful memories.

Served here 1980 - 83, 86 - 89 @ 1995. Went to visit it last year and it is a wreck. The old Sgts mess from 71 Ac Wksp REME has been very badly treated by vandals and metal thieves lifting most of the radiators and internal doors. The hangar is used by a haulage company, but the overhead crane still works. Bob Askey.
