SAS Werl and the Belgian Barracks Houthulst Kaserne was build on the abandonned WWII Airfield Fliegerhorst Werl. also on this location hidden in the woods is an Aircraft weapons testing range.

The remains of the SAS Werl; only the bunkers and the central watchtower standing. Belgian barracks just south of the road now converted into an industrial location.
When under NORTHAG command (during 1962-1992) the SAS contained grenades, Honest John and Lance missile warheads for the Belgian units at Köln-Dellbrück and Werl after relocation from Wahnerheide SAS.

The 4th USAFAD Military Mission was taken from them in 1987.

From 1987 there were no weapons stored at the SAS.

The 4th USAFAD pulled guard duty on the empty site for about a year and then left it for the Belgians to defend.

Raymond thank you for providing this information, it is always good to get the information from the men who were on site at the time.
Whilst i was taking the photos, I had a chat with an old local German chap who was taking a stroll by the tower, he stopped me and was happy to share his memories, and what a great time he had with the Belgian & US Troops stationed there at that time.
